Updated 2026 Workshop Schedule

The Great Basin Basketmakers schedule for the second half of 2026 has been updated. We’ve done a bit of shuffling. We added Nettie’s Pine Tree Basket workshop in November, as there was quite a lot of interest in this basket at the retreat. It will be a two part class, start the basket at the guild meeting on November 5, then finish on the third Thursday on November 19. We did lose the Christmas ornament program in November, but we could make ornaments at the Christmas potluck.

Artown: Garlic Basket - Volunteers needed to help make the starts

New member, Leah Boe made her first ever basket with Sue Ann last Thursday. This is the Garlic Basket we are scheduled to make with the general public during Artown on July 16,2026 from 11-3:30. With the limited time for the event, it was suggested that we make the starts for the people attending.

We will be scheduling a work session for members to help make the spider starts--laying out the sixteen spokes, then twining three rows. The general public can then complete the weaving. As we all know, the start is the hardest part.

President’s Message (June 2026)

We had a great retreat at Lake Tahoe this year. Had some interesting projects and learned some new techniques, such as Huichol yarn painting, wire coiling, knotless netting, lauhala wrapping, and folding a palm leaf to make a basket. It was a rather laid-back relaxing time, we were even able to spend time assembling a jigsaw puzzle and mostly everyone finished their projects and made some extras.

Come by our Open Studio at the Sparks Masonic Center to weave a round reed garlic basket and to learn more about the Great Basin Basketmakers. Free to observe. $5 material fee to participate. RSVP by emailing: gbbreno@gmail.com. If you have these tools, bring scissors and a small awl.
