President’s Message

Hi Weavers,

It’s that time again to start thinking about our classes and programs for next year, 2027. This year we have expanded our membership to include many new weavers. I have a thought that we should hold a Spring Session of basic basket techniques. How to start a basket base, some simple design techniques, then the finishing rim. I discovered during my class instruction, I can also use a refresher on basket techniques. I attended the Missouri Basket Conference in Lebanon, MO and learned some new basket tricks to make my weaving more efficient.

We also like to include classes weaving with all of the natural materials: pine needles, willow, barks, and tule. And don’t forget paper, wire and fiber. So think about what you would like to learn or teach for the coming year, as we will be discussing possibilities for next year. We’ve had some wonderful experiences this year, as well as some challenging ones.

We haven’t had elections since before COVID, we’ve been working with the same slate of officers. It’s time for a change!!! Some new blood and ideas, so think about where you might be able to contribute. April has been kind to give up her lunch hour to be secretary and I’ve been President way too long, we also have two open seats on the board (Betty’s and Trisha’s.) I expect to schedule elections for the November meeting.

We have been contacted by Western Nevada College to participate in a gallery exhibit beginning in January and running into March 2027. The exhibit is in conjunction with the wood workers and the textile artists in Reno. We will be entering approximately 15-20 items, entries will be chosen by October 21st. There will be a reception on February 5th. Looking for ideas especially in wall arrangements, an agenda item for the coming meetings.

We are also installing an exhibit at the Spanish Springs Library to run through November and December. Looking for sone bright colored, large pieces for the wooden cases around the desk area.

I’ve reached out to JoJo to ask if she would be able to do her Lavender wands at the October meeting if we moved the meeting back to the first Thursday, October 1, rather than the 8th.

It’s been a quick summer, my son and I put 4300 miles on my Honda driving to Missouri and back in July and August. It was a great road trip, but what an eyeopener driving thru the Midwest. Many small towns have gone the way of Walmart--the only business in town--turning them into ghost towns with no local businesses. More about that later, I’m out of space.
