2009 Programs & Workshops

GBB meets the first Thursday of the month at the Larry Johnson Center. Business meetings commence at 11:00 a.m. and generally last about an hour. Sack lunch is followed with "Show and Tell" and a program starting at 1:00 p.m.

On the third Thursday of the month, GBB presents an in-depth workshop featuring a myriad of instructors, techniques and materials.

Another learning opportunity occurs every third Saturday of the month. The programs are varied and typically feature more beginner to intermediate projects. These classes are held at Sky Peaks Community Room and start at 10:00 a.m.

GBB also provides special classes periodically featuring well known instructors who teach special techniques. Dates and class descriptions are updated on the Special Classes page.

Hear ye! hear ye!, Come one and all to hear about the worlds largest art project being created by "Willow Bill" Goulardt.  He will tell us about it at the January program and will demonstrate the building of a reindeer from willow sticks. Bill intends to place reindeer along the highway from Topaz Lake to Bordertown and for 22 miles of 395 through Carson City, where you can already see many of them along the roadway and on top of buildings. He has hundreds of helpers from local schools assisting him.  He has been going into the schools and teaching children to assemble them using power tools and shears; then decorating them with Christmas lights.  He says his goal is to "light up the darkness."

For more information about the project visit www.willowbilll.com.  The deer are a simple basic form leaving plenty of space for us to do some creative weaving.  If there is enough interest he will do a class for us later in the spring.  He was delighted to be contacted by GBB, so come to the January meeting and give him a hearty welcome.  Sue Ann Monteleone who was scheduled to do a deer fetish for the January program has graciously agreed to do it at a later date.  The program will be at the Larry D Johnson Community Center, 1200 12th Street, Sparks at 1:00 PM.   See you there.

"Creativity"

"Jim McCormick is professor of art emeritus from the University of Nevada, Reno.  His prints, collages, drawings, and mixed-media work have exhibited around the country, and he has recently had one-man shows in Reno, including Stremmel Gallery, South Valleys Library Gallery and McKinley Art Center. He has mentored many local artists (including Mary Lee) who have gone on to various art careers.  With a broad vision and great sense of humor, Jim will present a program on the creative spirit. Get ready to be surprised and delighted."
