Third Thursday Workshop June 19, 2008

Loom Weaving

The class will present a miniature Navajo style weaving project:     4” X 4” small fetish pouch, woven in the Navajo traditional style with 100% wool warp and weft.

Instructor:  Mel Silva, (916) 967-1230, email meljsilva@sbcglobal.net

The class will be held at the Larry Johnson Community Center from    10 AM — 3 PM.

Materials and tools provided:

Miniature Navajo vertical loom, 12” wide by 18” high, warped up and ready to weave on class day.

Shed rods, stick shed and pull shed, with string assembly in place.

Three colors of single ply weft yarn, genuine wool/mohair.

Edge cord for top and bottom of project, hand-plyed on Navajo spindle.

Tapestry and sacking needle.

Wood batten.

Push stick.

Fork or beater.

Class:  Students will be presented with a warp, (4” X 12”) on their loom with shed rods installed ready to weave on.  Each student will have a loom to keep, tools, yarn, and edge cord in a kit to make their project.  Background color will be light gray and accent/design colors will be black and red.  They will be instructed on the basics of weaving, basket weave, regular weave, applying edge cord, weaving stripes, introducing color, and wavy line technique. For more experienced loom weavers, vertical line, executing a design, and working with multiple color/yarns in a row will be covered.

Some students may not be able to complete the weaving during the workshop’s allotted time.  However, they will have the loom to take home and the instructor will demonstrate the finish process at the end of the class day.  In addition, written instructions will be provided to assist students with their weaving away from the class.

Maximum number of students allowed in class: 12

Cost will be $50 for the loom and all weaving tools and materials, $15 for the class: total $65

Students must pay forward for the loom, materials, and class, so that I have sufficient time to make the number of looms and tools required and prepare looms for weaving on class day. Deadline: May GBB meeting

Use of my loom yarns and materials for the class is required.   I will explain necessary yarn characteristics during the class, and students can substitute their yarn on future projects.  Additional pre-stretched warps for future projects can be purchased from the instructor on class day.

Cross-stitch Basket by Molly Gardner

Saturday, September 20 (9:30 AM-2 PM)

Sky Peaks Community Room

Learn to make a small flat reed basket using a cross-stitch technique.  This one is a bit different with the spokes being on the outside and the weaver on the inside.  It starts out with an easy square base and ends up with a round top with a neat rim.  Once you learn the stitch, you can make future baskets from paper, grasses, tule, etc., and as large as you want.

All materials will be supplied, including the pre-cut dyed reed (in a cedar color), 25 yds waxed thread and a needle.

You will need a small packing awl or tool, small pointed basketry or embroidery scissors and a spray bottle.  No soaking of reed is needed!  Bring your lunch and lots of enthusiasm, as this will be a fun class.    Class size is limited to 12.  Call Molly at 673-1628 to sign up before Sept. 10th so a kit can be prepared for you.   Cost $15 members plus $8 materials.

Third Thursday Workshop

October 16 2008    10:00 AM to 2:30 PM

@ Larry D. Johnson Community Center – Sparks , NV

Coiling Baskets - Beginning to Advanced

Instructor:  April Barber

April Barber will show us how to coil around paper core to make a small basket. This is a fun way to make a quick basket and very colorful. You might wish to bring some beads to decorate your basket if you finish it early.

Beginners will use yarn and more advance coilers may use telephone wire.
Please bring yarn if you plan to make the yarn variety. A fluffier yarn is more forgiving. If you plan to make the telephone wire variety bring any telephone wire you may have on hand. I have a bunch for those who don’t have any.

April will supply the paper core.

Yarn coilers will need to bring yarn, scissors, size F crochet hook and a large hole yarn needle.

Wire coilers will need to bring telephone wire (if you already have some), wire cutter, smooth-jaw pliers and an awl.

Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. There is no material fee. When you sign up please note which basket you will be making, yarn or telephone wire. Any questions contact April, please e-mail ecologeo@yahoo.com or call 849-1985.  Bring your own lunch!
